My 10 Day Technology Detox

  • sarahucoach
  • March 18, 2015

10 Day Technology Detox – My Story

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced during the last 2 months of transitioning from my corporate job to being a full time coach has been Technology.  I’m very grateful for this wonderful amazing space to coach, however, there have been a few technology bumps along the way.

I’ve learned that:

  1. External hard drives don’t last forever.  If yours is more than 5 years old it’s time you get a new one or you could lose everything.
  2. Backing up your iPhone doesn’t mean it backs up to iCloud.  Especially if you are on an Exchange server. Log on to your iCloud account to see what’s there.  If there are no contacts enter them into iCloud today.
  3. Home Wi-Fi routers & modems don’t last forever.  They may stop working when you least expect it

After my home Wi-Fi router & modem stopped working unexpectedly one Tuesday afternoon at 2pm I had a meltdown.  My energy was zapped. I was so drained by the whole experience. Being on the phone with my service provider for an hour then finally, going to their office to get new equipment.  After that I couldn’t deal with it any more. I thought, WOW, what is going on?  Have I become so tethered to the internet, my phone, my laptop that I can’t function without it?  I realized I was relying so heavily on technology as part of my daily life but knew I hadn’t always been like this.

I started thinking back to January 1997.  This is when I started my first job as a staff accountant with Market Day in Itasca, Illinois (NW suburb of Chicago).

I was so excited to start my first real job. I had a desk top with Windows 95 and email.  I went to work and worked from 8am – 5pm and that was it.  No laptop to bring home, no email to check at night, no cell phone to check messages or text and no Facebook to photos too.

Somehow I survived without a cell phone and without home internet.  Can you imagine?? For most of you can remember your first job with limited technology and demands.  Then, slowly over time technology has evolved and increasing become more important in our daily lives. It’s how we work, it’s how we communicate and it’s how we stay connected.

After I took the rest of the night off, the next day I got my home Wi-Fi back up and running but I still felt drained.  I needed a break.  I knew I had to unplug from technology for a while.  That’s when I decided to go on a 10 Day Technology Detox.  No Email, No Facebook, No TV, No texting, No phone.  That was my intention.  However, easier said than done and given I was traveling I had to have some communication so I modified it to No Email, No Facebook, No TV and limited texting and limited phone.

I even put this out of office message on my Gmail:

Hi!  Thank you for your message.  I’m currently on a Technology Detox vacation and will not be checking my email. I will reply to your message when on Friday, February 20th.

With Gratitude,
Sarah

I set a healthy boundary with my technology and told my family, close friends and clients my intentions.

I felt so free.  No need to keep looking at my phone wondering who’s call had I missed, who do I need to text, what emails am I missing out on.   They would all be there when I got back.

I needed this time to detox.  To let it go.  Knowing that I would be back and able to reconnect.

During this time I spent time exploring my new surroundings, soaking in the sun, being in nature, journaling (old school pen & paper) and reading (again old school an actual book).

I found myself being very mindful and aware of my surroundings, listening to the sounds of nature, and allowing myself to be very creative.

I started thinking about new fun things I want to like becoming a certified yoga instructor, writing a book and creating new coaching programs.

It’s amazing once you power down what starts to power up inside you.

Spring break is approaching.  For those of you who are going to be traveling or getting away I encourage you to take a Technology Detox of your own.  Know that that life will go on if you power down for a few days.  You will come back relaxed, refreshed and rejuvenated.

Think about how much screen time are you actually using each day?  8 hours, 10 hours, 12 hours?

Do you have trouble sleeping at night?

Do you allow yourself enough time to power down at night?

Do you need help to set healthy technology boundaries?  Ask me.

What I want for you is to give yourself a break.  If you can’t take a 10 day Technology Detox, can you start with 2 days?   Take this upcoming weekend to unplug and detox.

What will you discover or uncover about yourself?

I’m here to support you.  Please let me at sarahucoach@gmail.com to let me know how.  I’m excited to hear about your Technology Detox.

With Gratitude,

Sarah

What Would You Do If You Weren’t Afraid?

  • sarahucoach
  • January 28, 2015

I’d like to share my personal story of how I answered this question and my life & career changes which have followed over the past four months.

On October 8, 2014,  I attended the Lean In Conference in downtown Kansas City.

The Lean In organization is committed to offering women the ongoing inspiration and support to help them achieve their goals based on the best selling book Lean In by Sheryl Sanberg.

An hour into the meeting the facilitator asked the room of 200 women to break into groups of 5 and create our own mini Lean In Circles. After a few getting to know each other questions, the more thought provoking ones came and then came the most powerful question of all “What Would You Do If You Weren’t Afraid?”

After thinking about it and listening to the other women share their answer I had the courage to tell my group whom I’d just meet 10 minutes prior that I would quit my corporate job and coach full time.

I remember thinking “WOW!”  Those words just came out of my mouth.  This is something I’ve been thinking about for a long time but I just had the guts to say it out loud. I realized fear was holding me back.

All of the other women in my circle encouraged me to follow my passion.  One woman said “Sarah, your face lights up when you start talking about coaching.  You need to do it.”

Transitioning to full time coaching has been a dream of mine for the past 4 years.  I knew I needed to have a solid foundation before I took the leap which included getting the best coaching education at Coach U and graduating from both the Core Essentials & Advanced Programs.  I’ve also received my Associate Certified Coaching designation from the International Coaching Federation. During the past 4 years I’ve coached clients nights & weekends, created my website www.sarahucoach.com and wrote and distributed my free monthly coaching newsletter.

I want to  give a special THANK YOU to the 200 who received the first newsletter in March 2011.  I am so GRATEFUL to all 1,053 of you who receive it today!

After the morning Lean In conference I drove back to my corporate job.  Thinking more about What if I wasn’t afraid? What would it take for me to leave my job? What would my life be like as full time coach?

Then, I started visualizing my life.  Getting crystal clear on what I really wanted.

Later that week I was having Chinese and my fortune cookie said New Financial Resources Will Soon Become Available to You.  Hmmm.  Is this a sign???

A few weeks later my employer announced the company needed to reduce the workforce by 2,000 positions and voluntary separation packages would be available.

WOW!  Is this really be happening?  Is this what I need to make the leap?

After more thought and consideration I scheduled a meeting with my director to discuss the option of voluntary separation.  Going in to tell my director who I highly respect and had worked with for the past 10 years was very difficult and emotional.

I had a very good job.  I worked with a team of amazing people who became my friends.  I made very good money and had very nice benefits.  But I knew this wasn’t my passion any more.

I knew I needed to follow my passion for coaching. I know this is my purpose in life is to help others live their best lives.

I told my director that I felt like I was sky diving.  I was in the little plane, its 10,000 feet, the little door opens, the clouds are flying by and then its my turn to jump.  He was very supportive and encouraged me to follow my dreams.

So I jumped.  After 13 years at my corporate job I decided it was time for me to graduate and start the next chapter of my life and career.  My last day was December 19, 2014 which ironically is only 2 days & 18 years from with my graduation date from Iowa State University December 21, 1996.  Hmmm…another sign??

Now, January 27, 2015, I’ve been amazed with the coaching opportunities which keep presenting themselves to me.  I’m coaching wonderful amazing new clients, talking about coaching to others who are thinking about becoming coaches, sharing my coaching message with prospective clients and creating new and exciting coaching presentations.

I do BELIEVE in the Law of Attraction.  Once you create space in your life to ATTRACT what you really want it will start showing up.

So I ask you……………………………………

What Would You Do If You Weren’t Afraid?

I’d LOVE to hear your responses.  Please email me at sarahucoach@gmail.com..

I’m happy to talk with you about your unique situation and help you uncover what is REALLY holding you back from living your best life with my January SPECIAL Offer.

What Would You Do with a Clean Slate?

  • sarahucoach
  • September 18, 2014

This past weekend I had the opportunity to travel to Des Moines to go to the Iowa State Fair with my family.  This is a tradition for my parents, sisters, nieces and nephews.  We had a great day and enjoyed exploring all the sights and sounds of the fair.

This year we stopped a several exhibits which had coloring stations for the kids.

At each station they were given a blank sheet of paper and crayons to draw whatever came to mind.

As I watched my nieces and nephew color away I started thinking……

What would I create with this clean slate?

And I started thinking about my Vision Board.

My 16×20 cork board in my office with My Goals, My Power Statements, My Needs, My Values, My Strengths, My Favorite Quotes, all posted on colored note cards.

Are YOU ready to create Your Vision Board?

When I started my coaching training Creating a Vision Board was one of my first life work exercises.  I found it so valuable to:

Get Clarity on my Goals

 Identify My Needs and Values

 Utilize My Strengths

With a Vision Board you:

Keep Focused on Your Goals

 Give Attention to Your Intentions

Head Your Life in the Direction YOU Want

We each have a clean slate and the power to actively create what we really want in our lives.

Ready to Get Started?
Sometimes life gets too busy and you may find yourself running like a hamster in a wheel.

Exerting all of this energy and going nowhere and being exhausted at the end of every day.

If you feel like that, what I want for you is to reach out and give yourself a 30 minute gift of a complementary coaching session with me.

If you are ready to make a change and ready to create or refresh your vision I’m here to support YOU actively live the life you really want.

8 Ways to Celebrate Summer Solstice

8 Ways to Celebrate Summer Solstice

Saturday, June 21st marks the 1st official day of summer with the Summer Solstice.  For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere we will be showered with the most hours of sunlight all year long.

How do you plan to Celebrate the Summer Solstice?

Here are 8 ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

1.  Create Summer Healthy Habits

Summer represents a time of fulfillment.  This is an excellent time check-in where you are in your life and review your daily habits.

Are my current habits helping me to achieve my highest good?

What can I add or delete from my daily life to achieve my goals?

Need additional support – Ask Me

2.  Honor the Sun

If you enjoy doing yoga there is a set of exercises called Sun Salutations which you can perform.  These exercises focus on your body, mind and spirit while balancing breathing, meditating and moving your body.  Begin this exercise on the morning of the summer solstice and make it a daily habit going forward.  For you experienced yogis aim to do 108 on the morning of the summer solstice.  If you are in New York you can join fellow yogis at Times Square NYC.

3.  Go Green for the Day

Check out your local farmers market, stock up on lots of fresh fruits and veggies, walk or ride your bike where you need to go for the day.

4.  Power Down

Limit your technology for the day.  Power down your laptop, tablet, TV.  Limit your cell phone usage.  No texts or social media posts. Use you phone for calls only.

5.  Get Back to Nature

Go for a hike in the woods with your friends, enjoy the sounds and sights of nature, take your children berry picking, pack a picnic lunch and visit your favorite park, explore your local arboretum, go to Yoga in the Park.

6.  Sit Outside & Read a Book

Summer is an excellent time to rejuvenate.  Slow down and take some time to read a book on a topic you enjoy.

Are you interested in learning something new?  Developing a new skill?  Pick up a book on what interests you.

7.  Do Something Kind for Others

Random acts of kindness are limitless, offer to grocery shop for an elderly neighbor, volunteer at your local animal shelter, bring a meal to a friend in need.  There are many things you can do to help others.

8.  Host a Bonfire

It’s the longest day of the year, so stay up late, watch the sunset and host a bonfire for your family & friends and celebrate the kick-off to summer.

Ready to Get Started!

What I want for you is to enjoy celebrating the Summer Solstice and have an amazing time.

As always I’m here to support you.  If you need additional support and want to schedule an individual phone coaching session please email me at sarahucoach@gmail.com.

Warmly,

Coach Sarah

Who do YOU spend your precious time with?

“Spend time with people who only want the best for you. And be someone who only wants the best for others too” ~ Cheryl Richardson

Take a few moments today and look around you and see you who’s in your life.

Who do you connect with every day?

Do these people share your same interests, values?

Do you like who you see?

The people in your life are a reflection of who you are.

Do these people life truly want what is best for you?

Are they supporting you to live your Best Life?

When you are living your Best Life you:

Take Excellent Care of Yourself

Have Harmonious Relationships

Eat Healthy Foods that Energize You

Get Your Needs Met

Live with Integrity

Practice Gratitude Daily

Spend time with those who share your Values

Most importantly, you FEEL GOOD, which makes life seem easy…no matter what you’re facing.

Today I want to focus on 2 aspects on living your Best Life

1.  Getting Your Needs Met

2.  Spending time with others who share your Values

Needs are what run us. We are fueled by either healthy or unhealthy energy sources to get our needs meet. Healthy energy sources are love and spending time with others who support you while unhealthy energy sources are addictions and stress.

A need is a part of who you are

A need is a MUST for you to be your BEST

Needs change over time. Click here to get a check up on your current needs.

Values are what you are naturally included to do, what you are drawn toward, what you are eager to do without effort.

Values determine who you are, what you want and how you live

If getting what you want makes you happy, and if getting your needs met brings satisfaction, then living a values-based life brings fulfillment. Fulfillment is that inner feeling beyond happiness or satisfaction – it’s that lasting glow and the feeling of being totally you.

Click here to get check up on your Values

Are your values in alignment with what you are doing and how you are living?

I invite you to check in on your Needs and Values this month.

You will receive two life work exercises (Needs and Values) Plus 3 – 30 minute individual phone coaching sessions with me where we will discuss the results of your life work exercises and how to implement them to Live your Best Life.

$197 for Needs & Values Life Work & 3-30 minute coaching sessions

Ready to get started?

Email me at sarahucoach@yahoo.com to schedule your 1st session and receive your Needs & Values Life Work exercises.

With Gratitude,

Coach Sarah

13 Ways to Release 2013

13 Ways to Release 2013

The countdown is on. 2013 is coming to a close. I want to invite to release the year and be ready to receive the New Year. It’s important to release what is no longer serving you so you can start the new year fresh.  Otherwise it’s like crawling into a warm comfy bed with crisp white sheets and you have dirty feet.  Ick.

It’s also important to release the past so you are able to CELEBRATE all of your amazing accomplishments and be ready to create your 2014 Vision for even more good amazing stuff to flow into your life.

Here are 13 Ways to Release 2013 and Be Ready to Receive 2014

Acknowledge 2013 wasn’t perfect. No year ever is

Say Good-Bye to all the “not so good stuff” from 2013

Write a list of everything you want to release. All the events, experiences, situations, relationships which will no longer serve you in the coming year

Burn your list. Toss it in the fire place, take the list outside and light a match. Watch the all of the icky stuff burn away

Forgive yourself for the all the “not so good stuff”

Toss, Pitch, Donate any physical items which are dragging you down. Anything that brings up a bad memory or anything that makes you say YUCK and anything related to the list which you just burnt

Take a Salt Bath. Literally wash away the past year. Take 1 cup of table salt and add it to a warm bath. Scrub the salt water over your skin. Then take a shower to wash the salt off and start the New Year off clean.

Smudge your Home. Clear the old energy out of your home using the Native American technique called smudging. Light the smudge stick and fan the flame with your hand or feather. Walk through your home and cleanse the area. Click here for more on how to smudge

Now that you have released all of the icky parts of 2013 I want to take time and acknowledge yourself for all of the wonderful achievements and accomplishments of the past year.

Write a list of everything you feel good about from 2013. Keeping up with a healthy habit all year, maintaining a healthy life style, building nurturing relationships with family/friends, practicing extreme Self-Care, being financially sound, living in a home that you love.

Reflect back on the past 12 months and write down what you are most proud of achieving each month starting in January. Celebrating an anniversary, completing a home improvement project, taking that amazing vacation you’ve dreamed about, receiving a promotion, taking a new job, welcoming a new baby to the family.

Read your list out loud. Read it to yourself, your spouse, your best friend, your children

Feel Gratitude as you read each accomplishment. What I want for you is to feel deeply grateful for all you have achieved and appreciate yourself for the wonderful amazing past year

CELEBRATE all of the amazing fabulous things from 2013 and prepare to receive an even more abundant 2014.

What do you really want in 2014?

My 12-week coaching course Vision 2014 starts on January 6th.   Click here to reserve your spot today.

With Gratitude,

Coach Sarah

Vision 2014

  • sarahucoach
  • December 30, 2013

Vision 2014

Do you have something you want to change or achieve in your life in 2014?

Maybe you’d like to….

  • Balance the demands of your life
  • Start a business
  • Grow an existing business
  • Find more time for yourself
  • Get a new career (or a raise)
  • Lose weight
  • De-Clutter your home
  • Eliminate money worries
  • Or Something else

No matter what you’d like to change or achieve, the secrets to success are the same!

#1 Get Clear.  Be as specific as possible, decide what you REALLY want.  The more clear you are on what you want to have in life, the more likely you are to achieve it.

#2  Get Perspective.  Most people don’t tell anyone what they want or what they are struggling with and because of that they don’t get an outside perspective.

#3  Get Support.  Very few people (if any) achieve anything great alone.  Sports stars have teammates and coaches.  Be willing to ask the people in your life to support you.

Do you have something SPECIAL, something important you’d like to change?  If you want to SPEED up your success rate, then I’d like to help you do it with a 12-week coaching course where together we’ll work to….

=> Create a crystal clear vision for ‘ultimate success’ so you know exactly what you want, where you’re headed and what you need to do to make it happen.

=> Uncover hidden challenges that may be sabotaging your ability to make changes that last or that are slowing down your progress

=> Leave each session renewed, re-energized and inspired to finally achieve the change you seek – once and for all.

Starting January 6th, we will meet for the first of 9 individual phone coaching sessions.  Each session is 30 minutes.   The ideal schedule is to meet each week for 3 weeks and then take a week off.  In addition to our individual sessions you will receive weekly Lifework exercises to keep you motivated and moving faster towards reaching your goal.  Check out the FAQ’s for a sample Lifework exercise.

At the end of 12 weeks you will

  • Identify and Zap Energy Drains
  • Create Healthy Daily Habits
  • Clear Out the Clutter in Your Home
  • Create Awareness About Your Money
  • Grow & Nurture Relationships in Your Life
  • Learn the Art of Practicing Extreme Self Care
  • Plus Much, Much More!
