Food for your Thought

What are you most UnGrateful for this season?

What I am most UnGrateful for this Season?

You may think the title of today’s newsletter is a little off given its 10 days away from Thanksgiving and this doesn’t sound like the Coach Sarah I’ve come to know.  Rest assured it is me.  I just wanted to put a little different twist on Gratitude.

I am a big believer in the Law of Attraction which is the theory of Like attracts Like.  I also believe in practicing Gratitude daily.  If you are a friend of mine on Facebook you may be following my daily gratitude posts this month.  However, I also believe that life happens and no matter what sometimes negative things happen.  What I want to share with you are ways to turn your negative thoughts around quickly so you don’t get stuck in the negative rut and go into a downward spiral.

Last week I had an opportunity to attend a presentation by Deepak Chopra, MD.  Based on his research we have over 70,000 thoughts each day and as many as 98 percent of them are exactly the same as we had the day before. Talk about creatures of habit!  But even more significant, 80 percent of our thoughts are negative. This is important because of what we call the mind/body connection, psychoneuroimmunology in medical terms. You know what this is from your own experience. If you’re tired physically, it’s hard to think clearly. On the other hand, if you’ve been using your mind doing mental work all day, you’re likely to feel the effects physically, too.

Negative thoughts are particularly draining. Thoughts containing words like “never,” “should,” and “can’t,” complaints, whining or thoughts that diminish our own or another’s sense of self-worth deplete your energy. No wonder we’re exhausted at the end of the day!

The good news is, if you can recognize a negative or limiting thought, you can consciously choose to change it. One of my favorite lines from the movie “Eat, Pray, Love” is by Richard from Texas during Liz Gilbert’s time in India “You choose your thoughts the same way you choose your clothes each morning.  That is a power you can cultivate.”  Think about how much time you take each morning to decide what you are going to wear for the day.  As a negative thought crosses you mind put it back and pick something else.

Here are some examples of UnGrateful thoughts followed by the Grateful thought.

Everything around the house seems to be breaking

I am grateful I have the opportunity to update my home, car, computer, etc.

I can never lose these last 10, 20, 30 pounds

I am grateful I have enough food to nourish my body and I know what I need to do to get back to my goal weight.

I am so far in debt I can’t seem to get out

I am grateful I’ve have an opportunity to purchase items which have brought me much joy.  I know can create a sound financial plan to get me back on the right track.

I can’t believe my boyfriend / girlfriend / significant other lied to me; cheated on me; or fill in the blank with your relationship deal breaker.

I am grateful I know the truth so I can release that negative energy to open my heart to heal and receive new love

When you think something is IMPOSSIBLE.  Put an apostrophe between I’M and think.

I’M POSSIBLE!!
